Google Analytics is an invaluable tool for any webmaster, providing information about the number of visitors, the most popular pages, and more so that people better understand how their marketing strategies are working (or not).

But you have to know how to use Google Analytics to get the right insights. Otherwise, all you know is that you have a certain amount of visitors – you don’t know why, so you don’t know how to keep getting those numbers.

Here are a few Google Analytics tips that will help you get more actionable insights from the data:

Bounce Rate by Page

Perhaps more important than the total number of visitors that each page gets is the bounce rate for each page.

Your headline or a special offer might entice people to click through on the link and go to the page, but it’s the design and the content that will keep them there. If you have a high bounce rate, that’s a good indication that the page isn’t offering useful content or it isn’t reaching the right audience.

If you have a high bounce rate on your home page, it’s a good indication that your navigation or your page layout needs some improvement.

Visitors by Device

We already know that mobile is quickly overtaking desktop, but your analytics can tell you if your site is attracting enough of those mobile visitors to make sure that you remain a contender for a long time.

Pay close attention to not only how many mobile and desktop visitors you are getting, but what pages people are attracted to based on their device. Look at not only what pages they visit, but also what pages they stay on the longest.

If you find that you have a high bounce rate for certain pages on mobile but not on desktop, it may be that you have not properly designed the pages with mobile users in mind. You may need to eliminate or change some of the graphics, or you may need to revamp the content so that it gets straight to the point and is easy to read quickly.

Always look beyond the hard numbers to put them in context and understand why you are getting the results that you are.

Page Flow

You don’t want people to visit one page on your site – you want them to explore your content and learn more about your company and (hopefully) buy.

Looking at how visitors move between pages once they are on your site will give you some good insights about how well your site is designed and what content is attracting the most attention.

Pay special attention to where visitors leave your site. This might indicate that the page in question needs some revision, or it might indicate that the user got the answer they needed on that last page. You will need to look at the trends in your page flow to determine the answers.


Your analytics show you the keywords that people used to find your site. This is extremely valuable information.

By looking at the keywords, you will learn whether you are targeting the right keywords and whether you should be including additional keywords in your SEO strategy.

You may discover that people are using keywords to find your site that you never even thought to use. You may also find that people are using phrases for a specific problem or question that you don’t address on your site, and this can give you the perfect idea for additional content.

Long-Term Data

A lot of people check in on their analytics to see how their site performed after they dropped a hot piece of content or whether their visitors went up for the week or the month.

But if you want to get really useful insights, you need to look at how your site is performing over a longer period of time. You need to identify patterns in the data, such as whether your visitors go up or down at certain times of year or after trying out different types of content.

Looking at your data over a longer period of time will also tell you if your SEO strategy is working. SEO is a long game, so you aren’t going to see spikes in your numbers as soon as you revamp your content or start publishing more posts. You have to see how your site performs over time to know if you are really making an impact.
